This binding was commissioned by Stanford University to create a teaching model based on a 15th century chained binding in their collection (Stanford Libraries Manuscript Collection MSS codex M0413 FF BB). The binding was made in close consultation with Stanford book conservator Aude Gabory who concurrently worked on the original binding. The clasps were crafted by Chicago metalsmith Joycelyn Merchant, and the chain by Bay area blacksmith Celeste Flores.

9.25 x 6.5 x 2.5”

Text block sewn on split alum-tawed thongs, laced onto boards and cords pegged in. Quarter-sawn oak boards shaped all around, with special attention given to the inside spine edge to match the text block’s shoulder. Parchment spine linings extend beyond the text block and attach to the inside of the boards. Sewn headbands also laced into the boards. Covered in full alum-tawed goat. Brass clasps. Iron chain. Finished with blind tooling using the pattern from MSS codex M0413 FF BB. Text block of Hahnemuhle Gutenberg.
