Two Doublures: Leather Edge-to-Edge and Sunken Suede: handout, models
Luxury doublures in place of the more common decorative paper pastedowns between the turn-ins are a sumptuous and sensuous addition to a fine binding. Possibilities are limited only by your imagination: leather, suede, silk, even wood veneer. Leather and paper can be pared until the there is no thickness at the edges. These materials can cover the full inner surface of a fine binding’s boards, edge to edge. More delicate or less workable materials can be sunken into a leather frame comprised of the turn-ins and a leather hinge.
These models were made as demos while teaching a bookbinding workshop. They may include marks or notes made to aid students. Colors and patterns will vary. Cutaway models revealing structural features are sometimes available.
Workshop handout not included with model but available separately: Seven page workshop handout with tool and supply list. Please note this handout was written not to replace but to supplement an in-person workshop demo.
