Please note there are several weeks between sessions to allow students to complete their homework and to avoid scheduling conflicts with the Guild of Book Workers annual conference.

This modest binding is stripped down to its ancient, elemental structure: paper, linen, wood. Packed sewing on double cords and structural endbands produce a binding that is strong, flexible and sculptural. A text block of rescued dictionary pages provides subtle pattern and a graceful flow.

This workshop requires a sewing frame, 1/4" or 6 mm chisel, and Dremel or drill. Please familiarize yourself with how to use your sewing frame before the first session.

NOTE ON SUPPLIES: The packet will include the paper from one half of a Random House Unabridged Dictionary. This is a little less than the amount of paper used to make the model pictured here, a book approximately 5.5” wide not including the boards.

This is a fast-paced workshop for students experienced with traditional binding. To complete the material in the time scheduled, it is essential that students should be proficient in marking up and sewing on supports and have some familiarity with sewing endbands. Students should be making sewn books independently, outside a workshop setting. Some homework may be required between sessions.

Holiday and Every Day: Another quick notebook

This workshop is fourth in an annual series of easy to construct notebooks for last minute holiday gifts or for yourself.

This year’s topic is the Sewn Boards Binding with Sewn-In Wrapper.

This variation on the sewn boards binding is based on a model by Gary Frost in the University of Iowa Library. Before sewing, a long strip of card is hinged around the one of the pair of thin folded boards that start and end the book. After sewing, the card is folded around the front board, across the spine of the book, and again around the rear board to rest inside the fold. A spine lining provides support. The result is a lightweight, flexible book protected by a stiff cover. The wrapper can unfold as a wide panorama, presenting book arts possibilities.

Once you learn the technique, you can construct this book in not much more than hour, and a several in an afternoon. Start using your notebook as soon as the adhesive is dry or make a mountain of them to have a selection of handmade gifts always ready.

In this workshop you will make one notebook. Your finished book plus detailed instructions will be a valuable reference for future work.

Students will be introduced to the tools and techniques required for fine leather binding. Tools: English or Swiss paring knife, Scharfix, spoke shave. Techniques: lining boards to accept leather; paring for spines, corners, headcaps, and all-over thinning of the leather; paring and edgeparing for onlays; sharpening using microfinishing films; stropping; covering of a plaquette; forming corners and headcaps; adhesives and drying procedure for leather binding.

This workshop requires a paring knife, spokeshave, and a Scharfix or Brockman paring machine. Workshop fee includes all supplies.

Leather Working for Bookbinding is a prerequisite for all workshops in the Leather Binding Series.

Books generally have titles. In this week-long intensive, students will learn to title their books by hand in multiple different ways. We will title books historically, with misaligned handle letters, aligned titling with handle letters on spines and flat surfaces, we will use brass type in type-holders. We will discuss type, layout, and the theory behind the many styles of titling. This workshop is for the novice or practitioner who wants to extend their hands to be able to title with them.

Samuel Feinstein began bookbinding after a traumatic brain injury left him with constant pain and unable to continue his other pursuits. While the pain remains, he found that binding books by hand was a possibility for him. He trained at the North Bennet Street School in the two-year full-time bookbinding program under Jeff Altepeter, full-time instructor, and Martha Kearsley, part-time instructor. He strives to make his dedication and passion evident in his work, with a particular focus on craftsmanship. He currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.

Leather Binding Techniques: French-ish fine binding with leather edge-to-edge doublure and suede flyleaf. In-person workshop.

12 online sessions

The basic structure of a fine leather binding has changed little over the past 300 years. The text block is sewn onto supports, the spine carefully shaped, and the boards laced on. The book is covered in leather that has been precision-pared for protection, flexibility, and a sumptuous presentation.

Students will complete one full leather binding with edge-to edge doublures, double-core multi-color sewn endbands, suede flyleaves, and champhered boards. There are many ways to execute each of the steps required to craft a full leather fine binding. For this workshop our doublures will incorporate a leather hinge rather than the hinge being part of the endsheet construction. A temporary section will reserve space in the joint and for the thickness of the doublure.

A partial list of required tools: Scharfix, spokeshave, paring knife + strop.

Prerequisites: Leather Binding I: Fundamentals, II: Raised Bands, and III: Fine Binding or equivalent. Students should be making full leather fine bindings independently, outside a workshop setting.

The fee is $100 an hour, billed in half hour increments. Any student supplies, supplies needed by the instructor for a demonstration, excessive preparation time, and travel expenses will be billed in addition.
